Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cups (355 ml) ketchup
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup (50 g) packed brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons (30 ml) Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons (30 ml) yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon (5 ml) garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 ml) onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon (1.25 ml) cayenne pepper (or to taste)
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) water (optional, for thinning)

Instructions:

  1. In the saucepan, whisk together the ketchup, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, yellow mustard, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper.
  2. Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat, stirring frequently to prevent burning.
  3. Reduce the heat to low and simmer, uncovered, for 30-45 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened to your desired consistency. Stir occasionally.
  4. If the sauce becomes too thick, stir in a little water to reach your preferred consistency (optional).
  5. Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning as needed. Add more cayenne pepper for heat, brown sugar for sweetness, or vinegar for tanginess.
  6. Remove the saucepan from the heat and allow the sauce to cool completely before transferring it to a clean, airtight container. Store in the refrigerator.
