Ingredients:
- 6 medium apples (such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Gala), peeled, cored, and sliced (approx. 900g / 2 lbs)
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (25g) (or gluten-free blend)
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar (50g)
- 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar (50g)
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice (15ml)
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small pieces (28g)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour (120g) (or gluten-free blend)
- 1 cup rolled oats (90g) (not instant)
- 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar (100g)
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes (113g)
Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C/Gas Mark 5).
- In a large bowl, combine sliced apples, flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss to coat evenly. Dot with butter pieces.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt.
- Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Optionally chill for 15 minutes for an extra-crisp topping.
- Pour the apple filling into the baking dish. Sprinkle the crisp topping evenly over the apples.
- Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbly. The apples should be tender when pierced with a fork.
- Let cool for at least 15 minutes before serving.
