Ingredients:

  • 6-8 medium apples (about 3 pounds) — peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (optional, for richness)
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch or all-purpose flour (for thickening)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • A pinch of salt

Instructions:

  1. Peel, core, and slice the apples. Place them in a mixing bowl.
  2. Combine granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cornstarch (or flour), and salt in a separate bowl.
  3. Drizzle lemon juice over the apple slices. Toss to coat.
  4. Sprinkle the dry mixture over the apples. Toss to ensure all apples are coated evenly.
  5. In a skillet over medium heat, melt the butter (if using). Add the apple mixture. Stir occasionally and cook until the apples are just tender, about 10-15 minutes.
  6. Cook until bubbly and thickened to your desired consistency. Remove from heat.
  7. Stir in vanilla extract, then allow to cool before using, or store in the refrigerator.
