Ingredients:

  • 6 medium apples (such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Braeburn), peeled, cored, and sliced (approx. 800g / 1.75 lbs)
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (25g / 0.9 oz)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (50g / 1.75 oz)
  • 2 tablespoons light brown sugar, packed (30g / 1 oz)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (120g / 4.2 oz)
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats (45g / 1.6 oz)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (100g / 3.5 oz)
  • 1/4 cup light brown sugar, packed (50g / 1.75 oz)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes (113g / 4 oz)

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and water. Toss gently to coat the apples evenly.
  2. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, rolled oats, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Add the cold, cubed butter.
  3. Use a pastry blender or your fingertips to rub the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs. Don't overwork it!
  4. Pour the apple filling into the baking dish.
  5. Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apple filling.
  6. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 35-40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbly.
  7. Let the crumble cool for at least 10-15 minutes before serving. This allows the filling to thicken slightly.
