Ingredients:
- 6 medium apples (such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Braeburn), peeled, cored, and sliced (approx. 800g / 1.75 lbs)
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (25g / 0.9 oz)
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar (50g / 1.75 oz)
- 2 tablespoons light brown sugar, packed (30g / 1 oz)
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons water
- 1 cup all-purpose flour (120g / 4.2 oz)
- 1/2 cup rolled oats (45g / 1.6 oz)
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar (100g / 3.5 oz)
- 1/4 cup light brown sugar, packed (50g / 1.75 oz)
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes (113g / 4 oz)
Instructions:
- In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and water. Toss gently to coat the apples evenly.
- In a separate bowl, combine the flour, rolled oats, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Add the cold, cubed butter.
- Use a pastry blender or your fingertips to rub the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs. Don't overwork it!
- Pour the apple filling into the baking dish.
- Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apple filling.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 35-40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbly.
- Let the crumble cool for at least 10-15 minutes before serving. This allows the filling to thicken slightly.
