Ingredients:
- 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil (30 ml)
- 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped (about 1 cup)
- 2 cloves garlic, minced (about 2 teaspoons)
- 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for a touch of heat)
- 1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes (794g)
- 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce (425g)
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
- 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, plus more to taste
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- Fresh basil leaves, for garnish (optional)
Instructions:
- Heat olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add onion and cook until softened and translucent, about 5 minutes. Add garlic and red pepper flakes (if using) and cook for another minute, until fragrant.
- Pour in the crushed tomatoes and tomato sauce. Stir in oregano, basil, black pepper, and salt.
- Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer, then reduce heat to low. Cover and cook for at least 45 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened slightly and the flavors have melded.
- Stir in the sugar. Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning as needed, adding more salt if desired.
- Serve the marinara sauce hot over your favorite pasta, pizza, or other dishes. Garnish with fresh basil leaves, if desired.
