Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil (30 ml)
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped (about 1 cup)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced (about 2 teaspoons)
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for a touch of heat)
  • 1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes (794g)
  • 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce (425g)
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, plus more to taste
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • Fresh basil leaves, for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Heat olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add onion and cook until softened and translucent, about 5 minutes. Add garlic and red pepper flakes (if using) and cook for another minute, until fragrant.
  2. Pour in the crushed tomatoes and tomato sauce. Stir in oregano, basil, black pepper, and salt.
  3. Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer, then reduce heat to low. Cover and cook for at least 45 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened slightly and the flavors have melded.
  4. Stir in the sugar. Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning as needed, adding more salt if desired.
  5. Serve the marinara sauce hot over your favorite pasta, pizza, or other dishes. Garnish with fresh basil leaves, if desired.
