Ingredients:

  • 8 slices day-old bread (brioche, challah, or French bread preferred), about 1 inch thick
  • 3 large eggs
  • ¾ cup whole milk
  • ¼ cup heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, for cooking
  • Maple syrup (optional)
  • Powdered sugar (optional)
  • Fresh berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries) (optional)
  • Whipped cream (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Whisk together eggs, milk, cream, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt in a large shallow dish until well combined.
  2. Dip each slice of bread into the custard mixture, ensuring both sides are thoroughly coated. Allow the bread to soak for 30 seconds per side, or longer for a more custardy result. Don't oversoak.
  3. Melt butter in a large skillet or on a griddle over medium heat.
  4. Place soaked bread slices in the hot skillet, ensuring not to overcrowd. Cook for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through. Adjust heat as needed to prevent burning.
  5. Transfer cooked french toast to plates. Garnish with your favorite toppings, such as maple syrup, powdered sugar, and fresh berries. Serve immediately.
