Ingredients:
- 8 slices day-old bread (brioche, challah, or French bread preferred), about 1 inch thick
- 3 large eggs
- ¾ cup whole milk
- ¼ cup heavy cream
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- Pinch of salt
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, for cooking
- Maple syrup (optional)
- Powdered sugar (optional)
- Fresh berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries) (optional)
- Whipped cream (optional)
Instructions:
- Whisk together eggs, milk, cream, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt in a large shallow dish until well combined.
- Dip each slice of bread into the custard mixture, ensuring both sides are thoroughly coated. Allow the bread to soak for 30 seconds per side, or longer for a more custardy result. Don't oversoak.
- Melt butter in a large skillet or on a griddle over medium heat.
- Place soaked bread slices in the hot skillet, ensuring not to overcrowd. Cook for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through. Adjust heat as needed to prevent burning.
- Transfer cooked french toast to plates. Garnish with your favorite toppings, such as maple syrup, powdered sugar, and fresh berries. Serve immediately.
