Ingredients:

  • 1 cup (2 sticks, 227g) unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
  • 3-4 cups (360-480g) powdered sugar (icing sugar), sifted
  • 2-4 tablespoons (30-60ml) heavy cream or milk
  • 2 teaspoons (10ml) vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon (1g) salt

Instructions:

  1. Beat the softened butter in a mixer on medium-high speed until light and fluffy. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.
  2. With the mixer on low speed, gradually add the sifted powdered sugar, one cup at a time, until fully incorporated. Scrape down the sides of the bowl between additions.
  3. Add the heavy cream or milk and vanilla extract. Mix on medium speed until smooth and creamy.
  4. If the frosting is too thick, add more liquid, one tablespoon at a time. If it's too thin, add more powdered sugar, one tablespoon at a time.
  5. Add a pinch of salt and mix it well.
  6. Beat the buttercream for 3 minutes in total.
