Ingredients:

  • 1 fluid ounce (30 ml) Coffee Liqueur (e.g., Kahlúa or Tia Maria), chilled
  • 1 fluid ounce (30 ml) Vodka (Standard 80-proof), chilled
  • 2 fluid ounces (60 ml) Plain Club Soda or Seltzer Water, fresh and highly carbonated
  • Sufficient amount of Ice cubes
  • 1 Lemon or Lime Wheel (Optional Garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Chill the Glass: Place a highball glass in the freezer for at least 5 minutes, or fill it with ice water while preparing the ingredients, then discard the water.
  2. Fill with Ice: Fill the chilled glass completely with fresh, solid ice cubes.
  3. Pour the Base Layer (Coffee Liqueur): Measure 1 fluid ounce of chilled coffee liqueur and pour it directly over the ice cubes into the bottom of the glass. This is the densest layer.
  4. Float the Second Layer (Vodka): Measure 1 fluid ounce of chilled vodka. Hold a long-handled bar spoon upside-down, positioning the back of the bowl just above the coffee liqueur layer. Slowly pour the vodka over the back of the spoon so it gently layers itself on top of the liqueur.
  5. Top with the Third Layer (Club Soda): Hold the spoon in the same position. Very gently, pour 2 fluid ounces of chilled club soda over the back of the spoon, allowing it to float on top of the vodka layer. Avoid pouring quickly to maintain the distinct layers.
  6. Garnish and Serve: Place a lemon or lime wheel on the rim, if desired. Serve immediately with a straw. The drink is traditionally consumed quickly via the straw, allowing the layers to mix inside the mouth for the 'erasing' effect.
