Ingredients:
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened (227g or 8oz)
- 3-4 cups powdered sugar (360-480g or 12.7-17oz), sifted
- 1/4 cup milk or heavy cream (60ml or 2 fluid ounces)
- 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract (10ml)
- Pinch of salt
- Optional: Food coloring (gel or liquid)
Instructions:
- In a mixing bowl, beat the softened butter with a mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy (about 3-5 minutes).
- With the mixer on low speed, gradually add the sifted powdered sugar, one cup at a time. Mix until just combined after each addition.
- Add the milk (or cream) and vanilla extract. Mix on low speed until combined.
- Increase the mixer speed to medium-high and beat for 2-3 minutes, or until the American Buttercream Frosting is light, fluffy, and smooth.
- If the frosting is too thick, add a tablespoon of milk (or cream) at a time until the desired consistency is reached. If it’s too thin, add a bit more powdered sugar.
- If desired, add food coloring a few drops at a time, mixing well after each addition, until the desired color is achieved.
- Frosting is ready to use immediately or store.
