Ingredients:

  • 1 large head of broccoli (approx. 500g / 1.1 lb), cut into florets
  • ½ cup (120 ml) water
  • Pinch of salt
  • Optional: 1 tablespoon unsalted butter or olive oil (for drizzling)
  • Optional: Freshly ground black pepper (to taste)
  • Optional: Lemon wedges (for serving)

Instructions:

  1. Rinse the broccoli florets thoroughly under cold water. Cut into evenly sized pieces for even cooking.
  2. Pour the water into the saucepan. Place the steamer basket inside, ensuring the bottom of the basket doesn't touch the water.
  3. Arrange the broccoli florets in a single layer in the steamer basket. Sprinkle with salt.
  4. Cover the saucepan with the lid and bring the water to a simmer over medium heat.
  5. Steam for 5-7 minutes, or until the broccoli is tender-crisp and bright green. Test with a fork; it should pierce easily but still have some resistance.
  6. Carefully remove the steamer basket from the saucepan using tongs. Transfer the broccoli to a serving dish.
  7. Drizzle with butter or olive oil (if using), season with black pepper (if using), and serve immediately with lemon wedges (if using).
