Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup whole milk or heavy cream
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • ½ teaspoon salt, to taste
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper, to taste
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg, optional for depth
  • 1 tablespoon fresh chopped herbs, optional
  • ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese, optional

Instructions:

  1. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
  2. Sauté minced garlic until fragrant, about 30 seconds.
  3. Quickly whisk in flour to form a roux, cooking for 1-2 minutes until lightly golden.
  4. Gradually add milk, whisking continuously to avoid lumps.
  5. Continue to whisk and cook for 3-4 minutes until the sauce thickens.
  6. Stir in salt, pepper, and nutmeg (if using).
  7. Mix in fresh herbs or cheese if desired.
  8. Remove from heat and serve warm.
