Ingredients:

- 1 cup whole milk or heavy cream

Instructions:
- In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
- Sauté minced garlic until fragrant, about 30 seconds.
- Quickly whisk in flour to form a roux, cooking for 1-2 minutes until lightly golden.
- Gradually add milk, whisking continuously to avoid lumps.
- Continue to whisk and cook for 3-4 minutes until the sauce thickens.
- Stir in salt, pepper, and nutmeg (if using).
- Mix in fresh herbs or cheese if desired.
- Remove from heat and serve warm.
