Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ⅓ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • ⅓ cup vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8-inch round cake pan with oil and dust it with flour, or line it with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk to ensure they are evenly mixed and free of lumps.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine the applesauce, almond milk, vegetable oil, vanilla extract, and apple cider vinegar. Mix well until fully combined.
  4. Pour the wet mixture into the bowl with the dry ingredients. Stir gently until just combined, being careful not to overmix.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan, smoothing the top with a spatula. Bake in the preheated oven for 28-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  6. Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Carefully transfer it onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  7. Once the cake is completely cooled, you can frost it with vegan chocolate frosting or serve it as is.
