Ingredients:

  • 1 lb ground turkey (93% lean)
  • 1/4 cup Panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 4 whole grain burger buns
  • 4 slices sharp cheddar or pepper jack cheese
  • 1 large tomato, sliced
  • 2 leaves romaine lettuce
  • 1/2 red onion, thinly sliced

Instructions:

  1. In a medium bowl, combine the ground turkey, Panko, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon, minced garlic, salt, and pepper. Mix with hands until just combined, avoiding over-mixing.
  2. Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape into disks about 1/2 inch thick. Press a shallow indentation into the center of each patty with your thumb.
  3. Heat olive oil in a cast iron skillet or non-stick pan over medium-high heat until shimmering.
  4. Add the patties to the pan and sear for 5 minutes per side until a deep mahogany crust forms.
  5. During the final minute of cooking, place a slice of cheese on each patty and cover the pan with a lid for 30 seconds to melt.
  6. Remove burgers from heat once the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C).
  7. Let the patties rest for 3 minutes to allow juices to redistribute before assembling on buns with lettuce, tomato, and onion.
