Ingredients:

  • 8 cups cubed stale bread (such as brioche, challah, or French bread)
  • 4 large eggs
  • 3 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt
  • ½ cup raisins (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Cube the stale bread and place it in the baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, melted butter, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  3. Pour the custard mixture over the bread cubes, pressing down gently to ensure even soaking. Let sit for at least 30 minutes. Sprinkle raisins over the top, if using.
  4. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the bread pudding uncovered for 45-55 minutes, or until golden brown and the custard is set.
  5. Let the bread pudding cool slightly before serving. Dust with powdered sugar, if desired.
