Ingredients:

  • 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup (115g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup (240g) unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting
  • Sliced apples or walnuts, for decoration

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour the cake pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt; set aside.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  5. Stir in the applesauce and vanilla extract, mixing until combined.
  6. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, folding gently until just combined. Do not overmix.
  7. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan, spreading it evenly.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  9. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack to cool completely.
  10. Dust with powdered sugar and add any desired garnishes before serving.
