Ingredients:
- 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced (approx. 1 lb / 450g)
- 3 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1/4 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 cup full-fat sour cream
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
Instructions:
- Melt the butter and olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the sliced onions and salt.
- Stir in the baking soda once onions soften. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 15-20 minutes until onions reach a deep mahogany-brown, jammy consistency.
- Transfer caramelized onions to a plate and let them cool completely.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the sour cream, mayonnaise, garlic powder, black pepper, and Worcestershire sauce until smooth.
- Gently fold the cooled onions into the cream mixture using a spatula until evenly distributed.
- Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving to allow flavors to meld.
