Ingredients:

  • 10–12 large fresh Mint Leaves (Spearmint preferred)
  • 5 US fluid oz Simple Syrup (1:1 ratio, or 1 tsp fine granulated sugar)
  • 2 US fluid oz High-Proof Kentucky Bourbon (100 proof or higher)
  • Approx. 1.5 cups finely Crushed Ice
  • 1 large Mint Sprig, for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Place the mint leaves and the simple syrup (or granulated sugar) into the bottom of the Julep cup or sturdy glass.
  2. Using the muddler, gently press the mint leaves 3–4 times. Do not shred or grind the leaves; the goal is only to release essential oils, avoiding bitter chlorophyll. This technique is vital for a perfect Mint Julep.
  3. Pour the 2 fl oz of bourbon directly into the cup. Give it a gentle swish to combine the spirit with the mint and syrup.
  4. Ensure your ice is finely crushed. Fill the cup halfway with crushed ice and stir briefly with a long spoon until the outside of the cup begins to show condensation.
  5. Pack the remaining crushed ice tightly into the cup, forming a small dome over the rim. This dense packing is crucial for achieving the iconic frosty exterior ('sweat').
  6. Insert a straw and then lightly slap the mint bouquet against the palm of your hand to release a final burst of aroma before tucking the sprig into the ice dome. Serve immediately.
