Ingredients:

  • 3 cups (710ml) whole milk
  • 3/4 cup (150g) granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup (30g) cornstarch
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 4 large egg yolks
  • 2 tablespoons (28g) unsalted butter
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 (12-ounce) package vanilla wafers, such as Nabisco Nilla Wafers (about 45-50 cookies)
  • 3-4 ripe bananas, sliced (about 1/4 inch thick)
  • Optional: Whipped cream for topping

Instructions:

  1. Whisk together milk, sugar, cornstarch, and salt in a saucepan.
  2. Whisk in egg yolks until combined.
  3. Cook over medium heat, whisking constantly, until thickened and bubbly.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in butter and vanilla extract.
  5. Pour pudding into a bowl, cover with plastic wrap directly on the surface, and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight.
  6. Arrange a layer of vanilla wafers on the bottom of your chosen dish.
  7. Top with a layer of sliced bananas.
  8. Spread about 1/3 of the chilled pudding over the bananas.
  9. Repeat layers of wafers, bananas, and pudding twice more, ending with a layer of pudding.
  10. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and chill for at least 4 hours before serving. This Classic Banana Pudding needs to chill.
  11. Garnish with whipped cream and extra vanilla wafers, if desired.
