Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups beef broth (preferably low-sodium)
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons beefy onion soup mix
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • Salt to taste (optional)
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
  • 4 slices of baguette or crusty bread (optional, for croutons)

Instructions:

  1. Melt butter in a large saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Add thinly sliced onions and cook until they are caramelized, about 15-20 minutes, stirring frequently until golden brown.
  3. Stir in beefy onion soup mix and Worcestershire sauce; cook for an additional 2 minutes.
  4. Pour in beef broth and water; bring the mixture to a simmer.
  5. Allow the soup to simmer gently for 20 minutes. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper as needed.
  6. Optional: For croutons, toast baguette slices until golden brown. Arrange them on top of the soup in oven-safe bowls.
  7. Sprinkle shredded Gruyère cheese on top of the soup in bowls.
  8. Place bowls under the broiler for 2-3 minutes until cheese is bubbly and slightly browned.
  9. Ladle soup into bowls and serve hot.
