Ingredients:
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 2 cups beef broth (preferably low-sodium)
- 1 cup water
- 2 tablespoons beefy onion soup mix
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- Salt to taste (optional)
- 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
- 4 slices of baguette or crusty bread (optional, for croutons)
Instructions:
- Melt butter in a large saucepan over medium heat.
- Add thinly sliced onions and cook until they are caramelized, about 15-20 minutes, stirring frequently until golden brown.
- Stir in beefy onion soup mix and Worcestershire sauce; cook for an additional 2 minutes.
- Pour in beef broth and water; bring the mixture to a simmer.
- Allow the soup to simmer gently for 20 minutes. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper as needed.
- Optional: For croutons, toast baguette slices until golden brown. Arrange them on top of the soup in oven-safe bowls.
- Sprinkle shredded Gruyère cheese on top of the soup in bowls.
- Place bowls under the broiler for 2-3 minutes until cheese is bubbly and slightly browned.
- Ladle soup into bowls and serve hot.
