Ingredients:
- 4 cups unfiltered apple cider
- 2 cups cranberry juice cocktail
- 1 cup fresh orange juice
- 1/2 cup Grade A dark maple syrup
- 3 whole cinnamon sticks
- 4 star anise pods
- 1 inch piece fresh ginger, sliced thinly and lightly smashed
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 4 cups chilled plain sparkling water or club soda
- 1 cup fresh cranberries (for garnish)
- 1 large orange, thinly sliced (for garnish)
- 2 cups spiced rum or bourbon (optional adult addition)
Instructions:
- Combine the Liquids: In a large pitcher or container (minimum 1 gallon capacity), combine the apple cider, cranberry juice cocktail, orange juice, and maple syrup. Stir thoroughly to integrate the maple syrup.
- Activate the Spices: Add the cinnamon sticks, star anise pods, sliced ginger, and ground nutmeg (if using) directly into the liquid mixture.
- Infuse and Chill: Cover the pitcher tightly and refrigerate for a minimum of 2 hours, but ideally 8 to 12 hours (overnight), allowing the spice flavors to properly bloom.
- Strain the Concentrate: Before serving, pour the entire mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into the final punch bowl to remove all the solid spices and ginger slices. Discard the solids.
- Add the Sparkle: Immediately before guests arrive, pour the chilled sparkling water (or club soda) into the punch concentrate in the bowl. Stir gently—do not overmix, or you will lose the fizz.
- Garnish: Add the frozen fresh cranberries and the thinly sliced orange wheels to the punch bowl for presentation and to help keep the punch cold.
- Offer the Adult Option (Optional): If serving an alcoholic version, either stir 2 cups of spiced rum or bourbon directly into the bowl, or offer the liquor in a separate, clearly marked carafe for guests to customize their drink.
- Serve: Place the ladle and serving glasses near the bowl and enjoy this festive Autumn Orchard Sparkling Punch.
